New Langhorne Slim album "Be Set Free" to be released soon!

One of the most endearing and standout qualities of Slim’s live shows is his devotion to bringing out the little miracles in his gospel-like music. Be Set Free has captured this charisma and spirit – the “hold you heart” moments and “raise a drink” dance vibes – and is beautifully fulfilled through lush string arrangements and the fine sonic talents of drummer Malachi DeLorenzo and new bassist Jeff Ratner. Langhorne’s strong vocals lead the journey blending poetry, chaos, and the wisdom that reflects a broken heart battling the perils of true hope.
Be Set Free is Langhorne's most cinematic and cohesive effort to date. In addition to crafting his music, Langhorne constantly works on his performance. In his most recent tour, he’s played a show basically every single night. This summer, Langhorne will perform such gigs as Lollapalooza and the Newport Folk Festival.

O'Death featured in RollingStone.com

"This Brooklyn-based quartet sound like a bunch of moonshine-fueled Appalachians set loose in a Bushwick warehouse party. On Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin — a rousing collection of manic, lo-fi punkgrass — the crew add a fierce backbeat (played with chains and scrap metal) to bluegrass' traditional banjos, fiddles and hollered vocals."

Marissa Nadler Receives AMAZING Pitchfork Review

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/12813-little-hells/

Marissa Nadler
Little Hells
8.3

The core of Little Hells-- Marissa Nadler's elegiac and elegant fourth album-- is appropriately wedged in the middle: After moving alongside dual Wurlitzers and a theremin throughout opener "Heart Paper Lover", slowly waltzing above a country quartet on "Rosary", and augmenting a dark conversation between a man and his tired wife with industrial-iike programming and synths for "Mary Come Alive", Nadler settles back into her minimal roots for the next four tunes. During those 14 perfect minutes, it's just her voice and finger-picked acoustic guitar, augmented cautiously by piano, organ, and ripples of electronics. Surrounded by little else but her own melancholy, Nadler sums up her career's existential despair: "Ghosts and lovers/ They will haunt you for a while," she sings. And while they do, Little Hells suggests through 10 of Nadler's best songs yet, the sadness will either kill you or keep you going.

Nadler's earlier albums delivered this somberness almost exclusively through songs for acoustic guitar. On those records, her backing musicians seemed intent upon emphasizing the spectral, lost-love tendencies of her words, adding ominous cello shrieks, sinister electric leads, or raggedy lo-fi touches, which found her tagged from the start as a freak-folk artist. As late as her most recent album-- the exquisite breakthrough Songs III: Bird on the Water-- she did little to dispel that categorization, filling the record with archaic language and outsider accompaniment by New England experimentalists like multi-instrumentalist Greg Weeks and cellist Helena Espvall.

At last, Little Hells moves Nadler well beyond easy categories, thanks to a newfound clarity in her words, a compelling link between her songs, and production that sharpens her old strengths wheile brightly exposing new ones. Sonically, her reach is wider and more assured. On "Mary Come Alive", circular drumming, gauzed vocals, and synthetic harmonium suggest the unlikely union of Cocteau Twins and Swans. Meanwhile, "Loner" stacks organ sustains and submerges them beneath Nadler's strum and half-hummed coo. It's like Grouper coming back down the Hill or Valet emerging from the Acid, but more memorable and accessible than both.

But the LP's highlight is still the four-song core that recalls vintage Nadler-- now played, captured, edited, and arranged better than in the past. Her only solo turn here, "Brittle, Crushed & Torn", is crisp and concise, the presentation revealing the strength of the melodies in her bass-heavy picking and the wispy vocals above. "The Whole Is Wide" uses only that voice and Dave Scher's staccato piano march; the simplicity helps the album's most lyrically complex song translate off the page as Nadler intertwines the stories of two women, Sylvia and Laila, who waste their life away in the absence of a man. Nadler swaps first- and third-person pronouns and twists verb tenses, building tension by suggesting that they're both dead or at least headed that way. That time-and-person slipstream is what binds the 10 tracks of Little Hells so well. Nadler mixes images of individuals in various stages of love and loss, often pairing them with imagery of death, decay, and rebirth.

What Nadler's done on Little Hells suggests Antony and the Johnson's work on one of the year's other accomplishments, The Crying Light. Hegarty too alternated between thoughts of giving up, getting out, or fighting back. To do that, he eschewed the guests of I Am a Bird Now, choosing to sing with himself through fascinating harmonies, vocal lines intersecting with one another in unexpected patterns. He also expanded his sound in unexpected directions while refining what he'd always done well-- luxuriously layered arrangements-- through subtlety and tension. Nadler does all of that on Little Hells, and-- like Antony-- she's transcended freak folk as a result.

**** (4 Stars) - Mojo, Q, Uncut, Rolling Stone (France), Rolling Stone (Germany)
"Hells Yeah, New Marissa Album!" - Pitchfork
"It's her best, most expansive collection to date"- Stereogum

As release days go, this is one that we here at Kemado Records are really excited about.  We've been working with Marissa for a few years now, and are very proud of the new record Little Hells.  Having been fans of her music for a long time, we think the new album is a beautiful progression while staying true to her incredible voice and songwriting.  We're also really chuffed that everyone else seems to love it as well.  If you haven't heard the new album yet, definitely pick yourself up a copy of the CD or LP (coming later this month) here, and if it's MP3's you're looking for, you can go here.

Marissa is going to be doing a lot of shows in both the US and Europe pretty soon too, so be sure to check her out.

NEW MARISSA NADLER!

"Sub-zero temperatures, snow quietly cascading onto barren branches, and Marissa Nadler playing on the stereo; some things were just made for each other. Hopefully snow will still be falling on some parts of the world come March 3, as that's when Ms. Nadler's due to drop her fourth full-length, Little Hells.
" Pitchfork

We are proud to announce the latest release from renowned Boston singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler: Little Hells. On her fourth solo album, Marissa Nadler finds multiple ways to envelop the listener in splendid gauzy moods without becoming monochromatic. “The songs take on different personalities at different points in time,” says Nadler. “If a song is good, you should be able to do it in any style and transform it, take a risk and have some fun.”

A master of creating rich dreamscape atmospheres, Nadler’s voice shines and glides even more with a full band accompanying her. Produced by Chris Coady, the starry musical guests include longtime collaborator Myles Baer, Simone Pace (Blonde Redhead), and Dave Scher (Farmer Dave).  Few  contemporary artists can match the stunning ride of Marissa's reverb vocals that are a journey into themselves on every rose tinged track. Little Hells displays a brighter leap in musical maturity and attention to detail, as the fantasmagoric sounds delve into melancholy nuggets, sometimes erotic, sometimes gutting, but filled with a gorgeous sense of serene hope more so than previous album, Songs III: Bird on the Water.

Building on her hazy sonic foundations, Nadler ventures into territory as varied as the Brill Building-tinged pulse of “Mary Come Alive” and the title track’s old-time country loam -- a trek that’s both breathtakingly scenic and psychically compelling.

Sadness can be found in the undercurrents of Little Hells, to be sure. But there are just as many moments of serene reflection and quiet contentment in pleasures as simple as the warmth of the sun or the scent of flowers -- the latter of which permeates several of the new album’s offerings. That mixing of tones affords Little Hells both delicacy and strength -- a balance that, it might be said, exists in Marissa Nadler herself.

August 21st 2008

The folks over at MTV's Subterranean are premiering the new Langhorne Slim video for "Restless" on their blog this afternoon.  It was a long, hard fight to get this video finished and we're all extremely excited about the results.

Here's what the Subterranean Blogger had to say:

Now this is a video concept we like. Langhorne Slim’s label Kemado told us it was going into production probably three months ago and it’s taken all of that time to finish. It’s from Joey Garfield, who also was behind RJD2’s “Work It Out” and Aesop Rock’s “No Jumper Cables” videos.

The wooden man concept captures an interesting idea - most of Langhorne’s songs are about romance and this wooden man in rustic settings who learns about human behavior could be symbolic of a boy growing into a man who’s learning the ways of the world.

Naturally he returns to the earth in the end - a poetic ending to the humanity of a tree.

“American audiences weren’t prepared for the melee that was about to ensue, and it wasn't until a few minutes past the track's normal run time that it clicked home: That's what these songs were made for”- Pitchfork (Live Review)

Kick out the fiddles.

We are proud to announce the latest magical signing to Kemado Records, New York’s hootnanny punk heroes, O’Death. The band’s third LP, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin, out October 28th,  feels like a giddy junkyard hoedown, from the panicked fiddle screeches of opener “Low Tide” to the celebratory gallop of closer “Lean-To.” At times it sounds morose or contemplative, but underneath the melancholy is a gospel fervor—bashed from paint buckets, banjos, guitars and anything else in kicking distance—that defines their sound. Since 2007’s buzzed-about Head Home, the quintet, which contains vocalist/guitarist Greg Jamie, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Gabe Darling, fiddle player Bob Pycior, bassist Newman and drummer David Rogers-Berry, has evolved the possessed americana-meets-gypsy-punk of recent years into a more urgent, unrelenting celebration of life, death and everything in between.

New Dungen Album, 4, Out September 30th

Dungen's fourth studio album extends the acclaimed Swedish outfit's sound past psychedelia into something far more rare. Moving beyond mere stylistic concerns, 4 finds Gustav Ejstes' focus on the extremes of Dungen's sound separating into two entities. Blazing, raw guitar workouts have their own time and place, but now, so do stirringly orchestrated, jazz-cooled compositions with cinematic undertones.

Included in this set are live favorite "Mina Damer och Fasaner," excerpts from a wild psychedelic jam session entitled "Samtidigt", and a storming, Northern Soul-influenced instrumental entitled "Fredag". These stand tall with some of the most fully-realized moments of Dungen's career; percolating prog-pop groover "Det Tar Tid" and eloquent opener "Satt At Se", the latter of which is being released on a Ltd Edition 12" on Mexican Summer (and Subliminal Sound in Europe) before 4 comes out this fall.

Watch out for late Fall tour dates.

Marissa and Cheeseburger In Year-End Spotlight

Miss Nadler made an impressive appearance on Pitchfork's Best Albums of 2007 list, coming in at #46. As long as she keeps gracing people's year-end lists, we'll keep posting about it.

To the Pitchfork List

We Are Looking For Interns; You are Looking For the Time Of Your Life

Hey boys and gals (in no particular order), Kemado is looking for new and happy faces to fill our swanky office starting in January, and we think you might be a good fit (not you over there in the Korn T-shirt. Sorry). The gig is unpaid, but you will get repaid ten-fold with free tunes, shows, and most invaluably, awesome experience that will help get your foot in the door and on your way to becoming a master of the music biz. Please send an e-mail to internships@kemado.com with your resume and a little blurb out yourself. A year-end Top Ten list is encouraged, but not essential. Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you.

The third and 4th clips for the Priestbird video "Season of the Sun" are available today. The first one is done by the wonderful music duo Coco Rosie and the other is by Adam Levite aka Associates in Science. Coco Rosie's clip is reminiscent of the film experiments which grace their live show whereas Adam's clip is similiar to some of the material he has done for Beck, Interpol, Queens of the Stone Age and more.  Check both out here

Also today marks the first day of The Sword's destruction of Europe opening up for Clutch on their tour.  Look for more Kemado European domination when Priestbird does their own tour there starting on April 7th in Manchester, UK.

March 29th 2007

With only three weeks left until the release of Priestbird's In Your Time, we've got the perfect countdown to April 17th.  The band has come up with an innovative way to create a video - they had a bunch of their friends create different video segments for the song.  No rules.  They were each allowed to do what they wanted.  So, they received seven video-ettes from people like Associates In Science, CocoRosie and The Sword and starting now we are going to put the clips on our web site and YouTube in little batches then, on release day we'll put the whole thing together for you to enjoy in it's six minute glory.

In other exciting news, the band just finished a successful tour of the US with buddies The Sword.  From there they go on a huge European tour, and when they return to the US in May they head out on a string of dates w/ Chicago's Pit Er Pat. All the dates are found here and more US dates will be added very soon.

Kemado Signs Turzi!

We are excited to announce that we struck a deal with Turzi! Turzi is a five piece band from Paris where they are signed to the Record Makers label. Fronted by Romain Turzi, they play a blend of Kraut Rock and Italian movie score atmospheres (think Ennio Morricone) with a touch of classic US garage. The release of their debut entitled A is in the works for late Summer and get an (acid) taste for the record with a free mp3 for "Acid Taste" below. Turzi just wrapped up a mini tour w/ a stop in NYC and a few events at SXSW '07 last week.  Look for the band to come back to the states real soon...

Everyone, crack those beers open and drink all day because we are celebrating the release of Cheeseburger's self-titled debut out today!!!  If you would like to buy the record please go to our store or go to any record store that carries Kemado releases.  The trio of stooges from Brooklyn has a special treat for everyone in the form of a new video for "Do You Remember?" off of the record.  The video has the band running around a prehistoric land of dinosaurs. The old footage is taken from one of the most famous public domain movies of all time, The Lost World (1925). Check out the hilarious clip here.  Cheeseburger also has a few upcoming appearances including SXSW that are not to be missed!

VietNam just recently completed a live performance for NPR's World Cafe.  The broadcast will happen this Wednesday 2-4pm EST and you can listen to the show here.

February 22nd 2007

Tonight is the first night of the NYC residency for Priestbird and this show will be at Cake Shop.  The additional residency dates are here where you can also find the tour dates w/ The Sword. February 21st 2007

We are all very excited about the release of the Audionom record which is out now!  If you don't know yet, they are a collective of musicians from Sweden who play hypnotic pummeling noise ala Hawkwind and Neu! and Retrospektiv
is their first North American release. Find out what the press is already saying about them here.

February 15th 2007

Cheeseburger has done it again!  This time it is in the form of a TV show.  Vice has started an online TV station called VBS-TV and one of the regular segments is called "Practice Space" where they document a band in their rehearsals and everything revolved around them.  Check out the wacky Cheeseburger clip here.  If you ever wanted to know what a night of partying w/ Cheeseburger is like, look no further!

February 9th 2007

In video news, the hilarious new clip for "Tiger" by Cheeseburger can be found here. The video shows singer Joe in a tigersuit get pummeled by several cream pies. The song is coming off their self-titled debut full length coming out March 6th. While you check out the video, you can also download an mp3 for "Tiger" and see the Jeep commercial that has "Derby Day" by Cheeseburger playing in it. It's like a triple decker cheeseburger, so slimey, yet so delicious!

February 7th 2007

It is with great joy that we announce that The Sword and Priestbird (formerly Tarantula AD) will be joining forces to tour the western half of the US this March for a 13 date trek!  This routing will find both bands playing good size clubs and it will also serve as a warmup for Priestbird's record release on 4/17/07 and their impending late spring tour in support of it. You can find the dates for the The Sword/Priestbird Spring tour here and here. Also if you live in the NYC area Priestbird will be doing a few shows (also in the tour section) before the tour dates with The Sword. Come on out!

February 1st 2007

This Monday 1/29 VietNam is giving a special instore performance at Criminal Records in Atlanta.  It is the band's only appearance in the area while on tour w/ the Lemonheads.  It starts at 9pm and it is free!  Come celebrate the release of their full length which came out this past Tuesday.

January 19th 2007

We have exciting news here at Kemado. Tarantula AD has changed their name to Priestbird. The name change is a reflection of the evolution that their sound has recently undergone. Most importantly, all the members now sing and they sing pretty damn well. Personally, we think the new stuff is amazing and you'll have an opportunity to judge it for yourself when the record, entitled "In Your Time," is released on April 17th. Priestbird already has winter shows and a tour booked so stay glued to here for any new updates on Priestbird!

January 16th 2007

On the first leg of the Lemonheads tour this past fall, VietNam stopped by Daytrotter to record a music session for the online station. The performance is available now along w/ a band interview that can be found here. The site is really cool and the performance is pretty amazing. One week to go until release!!!

January 10th 2007

Holy Crap! VietNam is currently the lead Breaking Band in the new issue of Rolling Stone out now! You can find the article in the issue w/ James Brown on the cover or you can read that article here. Debut comes out in less then 2 weeks!

January 8th 2007

One of our favorite sites out there, Music for Robots has just released the second volume in their mixtape compilation series and wouldn't you know it but our band Danava has made the cut. Danava contributes "Quiet Babies Astray In a Manger" that is also available on their self-titled full length that came out in November. The cd comp is available on their site or you can pick it up at most indie retailers. Please support this awesome site and their comp.

January 5th 2007

Listen up! VietNam's debut full length comes out this month on January 23rd. That same day we will be celebrating the record by having a release show at the Mercury Lounge in New York City. Its going to be a great show! Right after that VietNam goes back on the road (tour dates) again with the Lemonheads for the second leg of their US tour. If anyone saw VietNam on the first leg you know that you're in for a dynamite set each night.

December 8th 2006

What a better way to celebrate the holidays than with some Cheeseburger news. Yes, thats right, everyone's favorite Brooklyn party band has taken a (brief) vacation away from the bar to finish up their debut full length. The 16 track affair comes out March 6, 2007 and its the band's ode to the great city that is New York. Expect some crazy amazing things to come from these guys.

Also on the record schedule is the release of the Audionom album "Retrospektiv" out February 20, 2007. Imagine Neu! meets Joy Division in a huge brick house of sound. This Swedish supergroup powerhouse has been off the radar of US audience for too long.

November 15th 2006

The Sword has been nominated in the "Metal Album of the Year" category for the Plug Independent Music Awards which showcases the best music that came out on an independent record label this year. Happy Monday! It is a glorious one for us - we have some good news to announce.  We have officially signed a deal with Portland's own, Danava!!  For the time being, most of you are probably unfamiliar with them.  A demo of "By The Mark" will grace the Invaders Compilation (out 4/25) and the band is currently recording their debut full length, which we will put out this Fall.  Until then you can check them out at www.myspace.com/danava.  They'll also be doing some Summer touring, which will be announced soon.  Also, if you live in San Francisco, you can check them out this Saturday at the Noise Pop Festival w/ Wolfmother & Parchman Farm - http://www.noisepop.com/2006/index.php

None of us had the energy or brains to update the site last week after the SXSW madness.  Sorry about that.  It was a great time all around.  Special thanks to the Dungen guys for braving what became a hellish travel schedule...and a big fuck off to Delta Airlines, who I am officially banning (not that they care).  We also have to give a big shout out to Tom Pisano at Tzell Travel - without him we'd never have pulled it off.  Finally, all the dudes in The Sword, Diamond Nights, The Fever, Elefant, Tarantula A.D. and Saviours - thanks for making it rad.  Our friend Jo Divestar took some photos, which we will post soon.  Check out this link: http://www.nymetro.com/arts/popmusic/features/16481/index.html

Lansing-Dreiden's new album, "The Dividing Island", will be out on May 9th.  I know, we've already told you a million times, but this time we come bearing gifts.  We've posted an MP3 for their new single "A Line You Can Cross"!  Check it out.  Also, we'll be announcing some April shows in NY this week (4 to be exact).  Keep your shirt on, we'll have that info soon.

Elefant's sophomore release, "The Black Magic Show", will be in stores on April 18th!  They are hitting the road again soon - go check out www.theblackmagicshow.com

It was mentioned once before, but the Invaders Compilation will be available in stores on April 25th.  The comp features lots of good shit from bands we love (some of it is unavailable anywhere else).  You can go to the Myspace page to: www.myspace.com/invaderscomp

As always, please go out to a show and support our bands - The Sword hit the road with Torche, ASG & Tarantula A.D. this Wednesday.  Diamond Nights are out with Head Automatica and then Living Things and The Fever are out with Electric Six.

March 3rd 2006

Hello all - so, we want to apologize to all of you out there that have had trouble with ordering in our store.  Truth be told, the thing sucks!  I would never reccomend using Squirrelcart as your backend for checkouts....in case any of you were considering it.  Anyway, we'll be removing the link to the store and you will be temporarily unable to order stuff from us until we can work out the kinks.  Thanks for understanding and hopefully we can solve the problem soon.

March 2nd 2006

Who wants to intern for us??  We need help!  If you're interested and live in the NYC area, please email megan@kemado.com.

May 18th 2006

From this point on, our online presence will be solid – promise. We apologize for abandoning you guys....but, something had to be done about our website. Hopefully you’ll agree that this one is far superior. There’s lots of cool things going on – check out the band podcasts! Most importantly, we’ll be able to update it daily now. Anyway, thanks for your patience and here’s what’s been happening...

The Sword's debut “Age Of Winters” is out and it is truly a force. We couldn’t be more psyched to be putting this one out. You can catch them on tour now with Early Man & Priestess, which we strongly recommend.

Also, in case you didn't get enough of The Sword on this tour, they'll be right back out there touring w/ Torche & Tarantula A.D. after SXSW!  Stay tuned for tour dates.

Elefant are gearing up for the release of their new record, The Black Magic Show, and are on tour with BRMC. The new single, “Lolita”, can be Downloaded in our media section or check out www.theblackmagicshow.com.

If you happen to find yourself in Austin this year, the Kemado SXSW showcase is all set – on Friday, 3/17 at Buffalo Billiards you can come and check out The Sword, Diamond Nights, Elefant, The Fever & Tarantula A.D. The doors are around 8pm.

Dungen are confirmed for this years Coachella & Bonnaroo Festivals! Should be awesome and check the tour section for other tour dates around those festivals.

As previously reported, The Fever have finished their new record, which is titled “In The City Of Sleep” - you can go check out a new MP3 called “Waiting For The Centipede” while you wait for the record to be released on 4/28. This is the first material the band has recorded since the departure of guitarist Sanchez Esquire and you’ll definitely find them exploring new sonic territory. You’ll also be able to grab a limited tour EP with material from the record when the guys do some some dates with Electric Six after SXSW.

The INVADERS compilation is done! It’s got 18 tracks of rare and unreleased (for the most part) material from lots of great heavy bands from the world of metal, psych and hard rock. You can check out the profile here and also check out the Myspace page – www.myspace.com/invaderscomp.

Speaking of Invaders, we’ll be throwing a Saturday Night party at SXSW (last night, 3/18) and it’s gonna be killer! We can announce that the line up will be Saviours, Witch, The Sword & a very special guest.

The new Lansing-Dreiden record, “The Dividing Island”, will be released on May 9th. Still no MP3 available, but that should be coming very soon.  We just shot a video for the lead single, "A Line You Can Cross", this past weekend.
